You don't have to be in a different country to experience culture shock. You can get a full-blown shocking discovery in somewhere as close as your education institution
Today I was supposed to have my Public Speaking midterm. Last week Lecturer told us that there would be mixture of MCQ and Short Answer Questions. So ok lor, I studied the 6 chapters he told us to read, and went to class today, anxious to get this test over and done with
The lecturer came in class 20 mins late, and he wanted to start lecturing. Suddenly, he asked us "You guys are supposed to have test today?" Lol he probably realized that something wasn't normal...that there were more students than any ordinary days...that's why he stopped to think twice.
He took another 10 mins to get our test papers. When he came back and distributed the exam papers, we didnt even need to move our seats. We were comfortably sitting right next to our friends. And guess what, there were only 15 MCQ, no short answer questions. Wah lau, 15 questions = 15% of grades @_@ Luckily I finished studying!
No matter how hard the questions were, maximum one could take is, what, 1 min per question? I finished the paper in less than 10 mins. Guess what, we can leave right after we're done! Woohoo!
Although I seemed to be putting this lecturer down, fact is, this seems to be the style of the department. Everyone takes things easy, lecturers practice it, students expect it. Probably they don't see the need to be harsh and stressful because the students just need the credit hours to transfer overseas. But I just wonder...will foreign universities see the attitude of the students and view HELP Uni negatively?
Well, whatever the reasons or consequences, I know that I am so not used to this department's system. In Psych dept, we stress over assignment from Week 3 onwards, the easiest tests or exam we'll ever get is 60 MCQ that worth 10% or 15%. I don't remember any lecturer being later than 15 mins for class, or any Psych lecturer forgetting our test day.
I'm just glad im taking these subjects as my final semester electives...I wanted my final semester to be relaxing, so that i can enjoy stress-free life as a student, and well, I got it. So, despite my complains about the shocking difference, I am also thankful for the laziness relaxness ^ ^
