30-hr Famine 2007

WARNING: Many graphical stimulus coming your way!

Holla~

Finally got time to blog! sorry been really busy with assignments. proposals after proposals, late night online discussions almost every night, early morning discussion again, wahlau, this sem is one totally hardworking sem!

Anyway, these are post-mortem of World Vision's 30-hour Famine held last weekend in Stadium Putra Bkt Jalil. this is the 10th year WV organizes 30-hr famine, so they combined both Chinese and English camp in one huge HUGE event!

Dear picked me, and we head straight to...savor our last meal of cos!
Last year i volunteered as group leader in famine, bcos i was a participant in 2005, and bcos i was World Vision's student intern in 2006, so felt enthusiastic to be part of the committee. but this year, when i heard there were gonna be 5000 campers, i told myself no way im gonna volunteer among this crazy crowd. so im back to being participants, together with darling. my dear friends, however, volunteered for their 1st time

so here they are, having to reach super early, and all isolated from good food. kesian them la, only got nasi bungkus as their last meal, so kind ol' me (and kind sweet dear) took their orders and bought them more food...
It's almost 12 noon! time to register, get inside the stadium, and forget that food exist for the next 30 long hours. so....one last picture to remember how we look like while our tummy are happy...
Dear and i got into the same group, and we started off with ice breakers. usually i dun enjoy those "build what u can with newspaper and cellotape" but damn, its a totally different thing when u have an engineer in the group (aka my Sayang). huhuhu...damn proud of our shelter!!!
After all those ice-breaking and housekeeping, we had free time. so quickly find those yellow shirt volunteers to chill out. this is how jon sern looks like while his tummy is still happy...
Yep, when jon's tummy is happy, his mind turns horny! *speechless sigh*
After our break was the activity most ppl look forward to, and for some, the only reason they're fasting 30 hours was purely for this event: Charity Concert. this year they invited many more popular artists. before i introduced the performers, let me introduced a "special" group of participants among the 5000 ppl - The Finalists of Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant Yesh, they're here to fast too. shall not comment further. next up, the celebrities first were invited to go stage to play some quiz game. so we had...Nicholas Teo and Fish Leong! as well as Franscissa Peter and Deborah Henry (Ms Malaysia 2007)....
After the game is when the atmosphere get HAWT!!! ooh always love this part of Famine. yeah babeh! we start to groove it, move it, sway it, shake it!
first to sing was Fransiscca Peter, followed by Nichola Teo (whose official fan club members were present, so i believe they're fasting 30 hrs purely to see him for an hour), Juwita Suwito, Daniel Lee (Malaysian Idol), and my coursemate, Sarimah Ibrahim!!! *woohoo*
She told us earlier that she was gonna sing Alanis Morrisette's and Cranberries' song, but i never heard her sing before til that night. ooh, she's good! then we had a series of other singers, and a local band called Couple. the concert ended with Fish Leong's performance...
Overall it was just amazing! except one particular incident pissed me off...some people were not bothered to hide their lack of interest on certain artists by sitting down when the singer they dunno/dun like came on stage. check this out:
they just sat down while everyone else stand around them. if they wanna sit quietly w/o affecting me, that's fine. but thing is, once some ppl sit, ppl around them felt obligated to sit, in order to not block their view. also, once some start sitting, they start pushing the crowd backwards cos they need more space (our asses are obviously wider than our 2 feet). so freaking annoying man...why would u come to a concert, and sit down crossed legged?

anyway, the concert totally drained our energy. we were singing along, cheering loudly, waving our arms, jumping, banging heads. woo lau, the whole package, u get the idea. so by 11pm, we were all ready to sleep. since this is a camp to get a taste of how the children from poor country feels, we obviously dun have hotel's luxury. not only no food, we also cant bathe, and gotta sleep on corridor...
5000 ppl staying overnight in the stadium...where do u think we can sleep? >.<>
next morning we had morning exercise...doing yoga while sitting on the stadium seats =.=" we were obviously limited to upper body exercises only
next we had group activities. one of them was to list down our dream menu, writing down what kinda food we wanna eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner n supper for 3 days. its just World Vision's mean way to channel our thoughts back to our growling stomach. keke nah, im kidding. they indeed wanna make use of our growling stomach to remind us that the poor children experience worse. 1st day, no food at all. 2nd day, had wild mushroom for breakfast, no lunch, tree bark for dinner, and no supper. 3rd day, no food til dinner, where he/she has one rotten banana. for supper, if they're lucky they get a bowl of porridge.
when u've not eaten for almost 24 hrs, u could imagine better how the children feels. it really is heart breaking.
this is a group photo before we broke fast...
this is how we look like when we each receive our break fast snack, but it was another hour to go til we could eat them...
5....4....3....2.....1~!!!! 6pm!!! time to break fast!!! YAHOO!!!
now our smiles are instantly brighter!
this is how my group looks like after breaking fast.... ^o^
few hours before breaking fast, Dear and i already had a detailed plan on what to eat for dinner, where to eat, and the exact dish to order. after breaking fast with everyone else, we quickly cabut to the car, and drove off to the restaurant! we went to Starlight Restaurant, and omg, for 2 person we ordered 4 dishes! Crab with Salted Egg Yoke, Steam Talapia, Kai Lan and Choi Tam....and we finished everything...

overall, it was yet another touching experience. the pics i put up made the whole camp looks like its all about fun and games, but it really was focused on educating and raising awareness regarding the lives of the unfortunate. the pain millions of ppl go thru is seriously beyond our imagination, especially when we're living in KL. u wont know how blessed u are until u experience the opposite way of life.
we fasted for 30 hours....no doubt it was torturous...i felt headache n weak n easily irritated, but then again, there's always this "short while more til 6pm, short while more til good food comes my way" thought running in my head to keep me motivated. see, i am very aware that my hunger is just temporary, and there is no doubt that my hunger will end, but for the children, they live day by day w/o even knowing if they'll live the next day, what more ending their hunger. so to all those who are reading this, when u complain that your life is so tough, and that the world is always against u, please think again of the things u HAVE rather than the things u DONT
